Project Overview
In September 2021 Carver Engineering Services Ltd secured the Etruria Valley Link Road Scheme which formed part of the SCAPE Framework.
One of the biggest transport infrastructure projects in the area, the Etruria Link Bridge connects the A500 at Wolstanton to Festival Park, unlocking hundreds of job opportunities in the Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone.
Our Approach
The project posed challenges in minimising on-site work and adhering to tight timelines while coordinating with other trades on the SCAPE Framework. As such, Carver conducted detailed fabrication drawings and trial erections at our Doncaster facility, ensuring precision and reducing time required on-site.
As well as pre-fabricating and assembling key components ahead of installation, we applied advanced protective coatings off-site, and utilised just-in-time logistics to streamline the process from transportation to site erection.
Installation occurred during scheduled possession hours, using precision craneage to position the girders. By minimising on-site construction, this allowed time for other trades to complete their tasks before installation.
Execution and Installation
The structure comprised 21 braced pair weathering steel plate girders, totalling 800 metric tons and spanning 200 linear meters.
We employed modular assembly techniques to minimise disruption, coordinating closely with other trades to deliver timely completion of paraslim and formwork installations before the bridge’s arrival.
The bridge’s 800 tonnes of steelwork were pre-assembled in Doncaster, where components were painted and trial-erected. Each girder section was transported in modular pairs to simplify on-site handling.
The outcome
Completed in early 2022, the Etruria Link Bridge provides a vital connection within the SCAPE Framework. It boasts impressive features like a new viaduct over the West Coast Mainline, a bridge over the Trent and Mersey Canal, and a full size spitfire statue on the roundabout.
This project demonstrates Carver’s ability to execute large-scale modular steel bridge fabrication efficiently while collaborating with multiple stakeholders, whilst reinforcing our reputation for delivering durable, high-quality solutions on time and within budget.
