Project Overview
Spanning the A38 at Minworth near Sutton Coldfield, this stunning steel tied arch footbridge stands 60 meters long and 6.5 meters wide, with an arch peaking at 20 meters above the highway.
This project was particularly challenging due to manoeuvring extreme weather conditions, tight deadlines, as well as a three-week road closure embargo due to the Commonwealth Games.
Our Approach
Carver worked closely with Winvic to develop a precise installation plan, choosing to pre-assemble key components off-site at our Doncaster facility to streamline installation. This included trial erections and quality checks.
Once pre-fabricated, the bridge was transported in sections to Minworth and meticulously assembled adjacent to a new roundabout being constructed by Winvic, which helped ensure minimal traffic disruption.
Our planning needed to accommodate the road closure embargo, while the project team adjusted schedules for record-breaking temperatures, adopting early morning shifts to maintain productivity.
Execution and Installation
The bridge was fabricated in three deck sections and three arch segments. We transported the components to site, assembled nearby, and then used two cranes to tandem-lift the 90-tonne structure onto six self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).
Installation began during a planned overnight road closure. The bridge was precisely positioned onto concrete abutments and temporary jacks, followed by securing bearings and tensioning Macalloy struts. This detailed process ensured the bridge’s structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
The outcome
Completed ahead of schedule in July 2022, the bridge now provides safe pedestrian access and improved connectivity.
