Project Overview
In February 2019, Carver was awarded an exciting project at Luton Airport Parkway to improve passenger connectivity at this key railway station for the LLA (Luton London Airport).
The main challenge for this project was reducing railway disruption while managing large, pre-assembled components on a constrained site, meaning it required precise logistics and innovative construction techniques.
Our Approach
Carver Engineering Services delivered trestles, canopies, and a footbridge for Luton Airport Parkway, focusing on minimising disruption to railway operations.
To kickstart the Luton Airport Parkway project, Carver participated in early contractor involvement (ECI) with our client, AMCO Giffen, working closely with them to optimise the design for fabrication and installation.
By pre-assembling 90% of the works at our Doncaster facility, we minimised on-site hours. Close coordination with the client ensured adherence to possession schedules, reducing impact on railway operations and public access.
Execution and Installation
Key elements, including the trestles, a 120-tonne bridge and pre-cladded canopies, were manufactured off-site and installed using a 500-tonne crane.
The bridge was slid into position using Mammoet’s advanced jack-and-slide system during daytime hours. Detailed logistics management ensured smooth execution, including protective coatings and precise on-site assembly.
By pre-assembling and pre-cladding crucial components to one side of the railway line, and utilising possession working hours and movement order logistics, this minimised the number of working hours over the railway infrastructure.
The outcome
Completed in spring 2021, the project improved connectivity and enhanced the passenger experience at Luton Airport Parkway.
