Case Study: Carver’s Contribution to Hinkley Point C

Date 28 Nov 2025

Carver Engineering is proud to announce the successful completion of the fabrication works used in the construction of Hinkley Point C.

As Britain accelerates its commitments towards a sustainable future, the nuclear sector is playing a key role. Central to this is Hinkley Point C – a landmark nuclear power station demanding immense scale and precision engineering.

This case study will explore Carver’s specific contribution to this monumental project, how our expertise and strict quality control supported our completion of the fabrication works, and outline the technical achievements involved.

What is Hinkley Point C?

Hinkley Point C is a nuclear power station currently under construction in Somerset and is designed to operate for around 60 years. It is set to be the biggest environmental project in Britain and will help towards the nation achieving Net Zero.

The project is outlined for completion in the early 2030s, and will provide low-carbon power for approximately 6 million homes. This will help Britain to save 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year and protect the environment in the face of climate change.

To construct the foundations of this power station, approximately 230,000 tonnes of steel reinforcements and 22,000 tonnes of structural steel are required. For such a large-scale project with crucial, long-lasting impact, Hinkley Point C calls for a huge chain of trusted manufacturers who can meet the highest possible safety and quality standards.

Carver is proud to be part of this chain as one of the engineering experts involved in the steel construction of this nuclear power station.

Carver’s crucial contribution

Our contracts for this project involved the fabrication works of beams and multiple large plate girders, totaling over 180 tonnes of steel.

Fabrication for construction in the nuclear industry, especially for a project of this scale and significance, demands the highest levels of quality control. Carver was chosen thanks to our relevant accreditations, including our strict adherence to ISO 3834, BS EN 1090, and Execution Class 4 (EXC4) standards. EXC4 represents the highest level of precision in structural steel fabrication, requiring comprehensive traceability and strict third-party auditing.

Joining the project during the fabrication stage, rather than in the earlier design phase, meant that time and schedule management was crucial. Our facility’s capacity and readiness to begin work for the project and its specifications as soon as possible further helped us to secure this job by demonstrating our commitment to the client’s needs.

As soon as the steel arrived, we hit the ground running at our Doncaster facility. At 20m long and 2.370m tall, the plate girders were both the largest fabrications we have completed for the nuclear sector yet, and amongst some of the biggest we have processed at our facility.

We successfully completed all fabrication works on time, avoiding site delays and guaranteeing client satisfaction.

Challenges & achievements

Successfully delivering these components required more than just technical capacity; it demanded a rigorous approach to logistics and precision engineering. Carver team working on Hinkley Point C fabrication works

Managing such huge and heavy steelworks while maintaining the exact requirements that the nuclear sector demands added a unique layer of complexity. Each operation had to be planned meticulously to maintain our schedule and strict safety adherence while ensuring accuracy of the works done.

Despite the complexities and sector-specific challenges, we successfully fabricated the steel components required for Hinkley Point C to a premium quality, and delivered them on time. Although our contribution was small in comparison to the overall project, it was an incredible opportunity for the Carver team. It was challenging and rewarding, but a great achievement for everyone involved!
